whether with gentoo or solaris, you have your other machines dependent on the "router" host for the internet connection ... should you have to reboot your router host for any reason (i.e., patch install, hardware reset, etc.) while working on a major project online with your mac --- you'd be toast if you didn't save your work on the mac before the sudden disconnection ... i'd err on the side of caution and spend the few extra bucks myself ...
