SUSE9.1 Peculiar Gigabit Lan performance.

I'm having some peculiar performance issues with my Gigabit Lan.

I have some 100Mb devices so I can't do the necessary "jumbo Frame" tweaks for absolute optimum performance as I'd prevent them access.

I'm getting appauling transfer rates sending files to the linux machine, around 10 Mbps 3% utilization (off the top of my head). However, the second I download from the internet using the Linux machine whilst simultaneously sending files to it I get a very heathy 200mbps+.

Every time I have some files to transfer I now find that I have to set the Linux machine downloading a huge file off the net just so I can get the increased local network performance.

Anyone know how I can get this performance increase without connecting to the net?

I am posting this as an FYI. I burned a lot of time on digging for this solution. The problem was performance between newer AIX p series boxes and a sun 4500 with a fiber nic. stge -- Sundance/Tamarack TC9021 Gigabit Ethernet driver SYNOPSIS

The stge device driver supports the Sundance/Tamarack TC9021 Gigabit Ethernet chip. The Sundance/Tamarack TC9021 is found on the D-Link DGE-550T, and the Antares Microsystems Gigabit Ethernet board. It uses an external PHY or an external 10-bit interface. The TC9021 supports IPv4/TCP/UDP checksumming in hardware. The stge driver supports this feature of the chip. The stge driver was written by Jason R. Thorpe <thorpej@NetBSD.org>. BUGS
The stge driver does not support the VLAN tag insertion/removal feature of the TC9021 chip. This is primarily because the TC9021's VLAN do not have a useful programming interface. The stge driver does not yet support jumbo Ethernet frames. The stge driver does not yet function properly with 1000BASE-T fitted boards. Currently, only 1000BASE-SX boards work. BSD
