removing lilo

I have a machine that dual boots win2k and linux, and we are handing it off so it no longer needs linux. Linux is a separate partition so I can delete the partition, but I need to remove lilo- how do I do that ?

I'm not too sure about how win2k's fdisk work, but in other Windows versions, you can type "FDISK /MBR" to reformat the master boot record.

Make sure to take a backup first!

Best bet is if you got a Windows 98 machine to create aboot disk from that. I always got 2 win98 boot disk.

then as LivinFree says do a fdisk /mbr

That always works for me.

What happens when I do fdisk /mbr? Do I get some kind of menu? I am only asking this because I know fdisk is a partitioning utility and I don't want to screw up the master boot record, Just want to edit it. Smilie

You don't get a menu when you do fdisk /mbr (at least I never did ...) you just wipe out the MBR..... and then you use LILO to reinstall....

I guess am not clear...I don't want linux anymore ( I am actually going to be installing Solaris 8 intel) but I want to keep my win2k. Will wiping out the master boot record also wipe out any reference to win2k?

yes..!! fdisk /mbr will wipe out all master boot record of the disk. Hence do not perform that command if you want Win2k partition to be still there.

I think you better start Solaris installation, & then you can overwrite the Linux partition with the solaris one.

Hope this helps !!
