UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

This server had an HP C1555 tape drive that appears to have gone belly up. We found a replacement, an HP C1537, that we want to install. We did the hardware thing, with power off, of course, but when the box was rebooted it did not seem to recognize the drive. At least the backup software did not.

I'm a UNIX newbie, but an experienced MacOS and Windows geek. Can anyone please lay out the steps (from login) that are required to get the drive to work?

Any help will be greatly appreciated - this box runs proprietary software that we cannot access, and this software includes the backup of the built-in database. Needless to say, we are extremely vulnerable at this point....

Those would seem to be SCSI drives from what limited info I can find. Did you set the SCSI ID to the same as the old drive?

If it has the wrong number, the drive might still be recognized, just as a totally different device number. Or it might be conflicting with another device on the chain, preventing both from working...

Yes, you're absolutely correct - and if the proprietary software is expecting a device at a particular address, and it's not there, it will fail. I'll check on Monday and report back. Thanks for the help!
