mail command not working


I am trying to runmail command to send some text to my email id. But its getting hanged up.
Not sure what is the problem.
Please help.

mail -s "testing"

After entering "mail -s "testing" email@address, you will get a blank line to start typing your message. Continue typing, although there is no way to correct errors or change anything on previous lines, until the message is complete. At that time enter a <Ctrl>d on a line by itself, and the message will be sent.
Create the message using a text editor, and when complete enter:
mail -s "subject" email@address <my_message_file
