correct...

i type boot cdrom - text because I can't do the GUI install and I get this error now

can't open boot device

Boot device: disk:a File and args:

I tried to do some searching and I read something about mounting or making sure the path to the cdrom is correct.. whatever that means.

I verified that the system can read the cd drive so now it's just a matter of symantecs

Insure you are putting the errors exactly as received (start with the command you type in to boot).

If the system is showing

can't open boot device

then it may not be able to open the cd (or the burn to ISO format didn't work)

The next message doesn't make sense since it is showing disk:a - was that what you were attempting to boot from or the cd? If you still have Solaris 8 on the server, boot it and double check the cd is working - more than likely the burn didn't take correctly and the server is then picking the default boot device (disk:a) to boot from.

Boot device: disk:a File and args:

boot cdrom - text

it goes for a bit then says

can't open boot device (then it skips about 5 lines leaving them blank)

then it reads
disk:a File and args:

It then starts to boot up like normal and it takes me to the login prompt

so I probably didn't burn the ISO properly

Here's the message I'm getting before it fails the cd boot and starts the normal boot process....

Any help would be greatly appreciated

~~~~~
Rebooting with command: boot cdrom - text
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2, 0:f
Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package
Evaluating: boot cdrom - text
can't open boot device
Boot device: disk a: File and args:
~~~~

Then it starts the normal boot up

If you haven't figured this out, the error:

Bad magic number in disk label

Tells you that the disk (CDROM) is bad. It cannot identift the 'file' on the disk as a bootable image.
