validate the last char of a vairbale

Okay...brain freeze.

How can I check if the last char of a variable is the letter r?

var1=xxxxxxr

if [ $var1 = ???? somthing here ?????r ]

Still frozen......

cheers,
Neil

Try :
Code:
if [ "`expr "$var1" : '.*\(.\)'`" = 'r' ]

or (ksh syntax)
Code:
if [[ "$var1" = *r ]]

Code:
perl -e '$a = abcdefr; if ( $a =~ /r$/ ) { print $a . "\n" }';
