You asked for a solution in awk and you said you want to use a for loop. I assume you understand that no loop is needed for this.
Code:
VARA="hello|welcome|gone|fantastic|superb|nicecar"
VARB="("VARA")"
gsub("[|]",") (",VARB)
print VARB

Code:
echo 'hello|welcome|gone|fantastic|superb|nicecar' | awk -F'|' '{$0="(" $0 ")"}$1=$1' OFS=') ('

-F'|' - set input FieldSeparator to |

'{$0="(" $0 ")"} - for every line add a leading '(' and a trailing ')'

$1=$1 - force reevaluation of a current record/line given the OFS change and $0 changes above

OFS=') (' - set the OuputField separator to )space(: this effectively changes all the pipes to ') ('
