Presupposing ksh, check whether DIRECTORY is valid after the read with:

[ -d $DIRECTORY ] || {
echo bad directory $DIRECTORY
exit
}

# then change to the target directory
cd $DIRECTORY

Then, you're already in the directory when you call ftp and there's no need for the lcd command in the ftp script.
