Does anyone know what the microprograms behind cat (and other commands) are like? In what language are those programs designed? Is their source available somewhere?

the variable d should contain the number of the process,
instead of that it contains 'cat process-id'

I am trying to send text to a USB to serial adaptor and then to an external speech synthesizer. I tried using the cat and echo commands with no luck. gvfs-cat - print a file to standard output using the VFS system
SYNOPSIS
gvfs-cat URI
DESCRIPTION
gvfs-cat prints a file to standard output using the virtual file system to access the file via a URI.
OPERANDS
The following operands are supported:
URI Specifies the file location in standard URI format.
EXAMPLES
Example 1: Cat a File From a Web Server
example% gvfs-cat http://www.sun.com
Example 2: Cat a Local File
example% gvfs-cat file:///home/user/README.txt
