Yes that is. With
for line in $(ls); do head -1 $line >> myfile; done
worked as well if I had the files, whose first lines I want to put together, in the same directory, but it is not like this. I've skipped the details. What I wanted is to join together the first value of 6 files named fort.605 in one file, each in a different directory, i.e:
approach1.dir/fort.605
...
approach6.dir/fort.605
The first way is straightforward, but thanks a lot

How can the head command be used to extract only a particular line.
By default head -n filename displays the first n lines. I want only the nth line.
I couldn't get it from forum search.

I am trying to do a head on a mainframe file and on doing ti just gives me a blank screen with nothing on it.
however, when i do a tail for the same file...i get a few lines on the screen.

NAME
gvfs-monitor-dir - monitor the change of a directory content using the VFS system
SYNOPSIS
gvfs-monitor-dir URI
DESCRIPTION
gvfs-monitor-dir monitors the change content of a directory using the VFS system. If anything changes inside the directory, gvfs-monitor-
dir will print a message informing of the event.
OPERANDS
The following operands are supported:
URI Specifies the directory location in standard URI format.
EXAMPLES
Example 1: Monitor a local directory
example% gvfs-monitor-dir file:///tmp/example
