use "mysqladmin ping" option, if it's up and running, you should see "mysqld is alive" response. You can use "status" instead of ping, and you'll see the uptime. As of : "how long" probably you should find the answer in the log files.

I recently installed mysql-standard-5.0.21-solaris9-sparc-64bit.pkg on a Solaris 9 machine (SunOS 5.9 Generic_118558-19 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-250). replace - A utility program that is used by msql2mysql, but that has more general applicability as well. replace changes strings in place in files or on the standard input. Uses a finite state machine to match longer strings first. Can be used to swap strings. USAGE
