UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

hello , guys , im new to unix , just passed out my system admin certification from sun. i need to do few things at home , which are
1. ihave a unix box and windows box wired together using hub , i want to use internet from windows box . i have win98 ist edition , as well as win2000 server. kindly help
2. i want to know how to setup oracle database server on unix box , which is sparc20.

Are you wanting the Windows machine to be the gateway for the Sun machine?

hi auswipe ,
i already have internet connected to windows machine , i just want to know which files in unix box to be configured properly ,(like /etc/resolve.conf . and /etc/hosts , or any other..) so tht i can connect to internet, as well as set mail server, via windows machine., i can now ftp and telnet between 2 machines , very well..do i also need to make windows as proxy server?

That's a real good question.

I know that some versions of Windows support ICS, Internet Connection Sharing but I have no idea if this is TCP/IP or SMB compliant. To tell you the truth, I have always known of people setting up Unix boxes to act as the gateway for the Win32 machines so I am at a bit of a loss for knowledge in this situation.

If you cannot use the Win32 machine as a gateway with ICS, I would take a look at some of the other proxy software available for Win32.

I have my resolv.conf setup for my ISPs DNS servers and setup the /etc/defaultrouter for my proxy/router OpenBSD box and setup ifconfig for the proper subnet ans have at it.

yeah , thanx any way , i cant use unix box as gateway , becouse dont have modem for tht. i will try something and figure it out.
