UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I just got a Sunblade running Solaris 9. I am wanting to be able to connect to it from Windows XP Pro and use X-windows. Can someone point me in the right direction on what I need to do? I have tried using several programs I have found on the web to to the XServer stuff but when I log in to the sunblade remotely and type startx at the command prompt i get that it is an unrecognized command. Is there a specific shell I need to use, is there something special I need to do on the UNIX box? Please help.

First of all you need to install and run an X Window server such as Xming on your MS Windows PC. Then you login into your Sunblade, set the DISPLAY environmental variable to the fully qualified name of your PC and start an X Window client such as xeyes. xeyes is then displayed on your PC by the X Window server which is running on your PC.

Sol9 stores a lot of it's x windows apps under /usr/openwin/bin which is not in the default path when you connect remotely. That'll cause your unrecognised command messages.

As fpmurphy says though, make sure you x-server is up and running first

Thanks for the information. I think the DISPLAY variable is my number 1 problem, and the PATH is probably a secondary issue. I will give it a go when I get home tomorrow and let you know if I am still stumped.
Is XMING the best freeware x-server or does anyone have a better recommendation?
