How can I copy files and subdirectory?

I am trying to copy some files from one location to another and I need to write a script to move all the files and the subdirectories to the new location (both unix), but excluding the temp directory.

i.e., I want to avoid copying my temp subdirectories during the process of copying other files and subdirectories

Does anyone has an idea?

This is very urgent:

check out the man page on tar - it shows an example of not coping certain files.

Thanks for your quick response, thehoghunter, can you please give me the url for the tar page? I'm kind of having some difficulty locating where it is.
