/var/tmp would probably be in /var or ever just /. Check using 'df -k /var/tmp'. This will tell you the usage of the filesystem where /var/tmp is located.

It's worth noting that the -T option to sort can be used to specify an alternative temporary file location.

to make sure, it is specifically using /var/tmp or any other directory..

running the command with system call tracer would be a better way...
