I think that gian' meant to say was...

Code:
server# > /tmp/newfile
server# ls -l /tmp/newfile
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 2 11:40 /tmp/newfile

.... that you can use the > trick to create a new file like we do with touch (not update).

Ah...
Sorry if I created any confusion.
I've always used "> file" to create an empty file
(or truncate one) and "touch" forto update times
for existing files.

I've been one of those who have created empty files for years and years using touch and really appreciate the > newfile trick vs. my old friend touch newfile old habits.

rwb1959 says..... Sorry if I created any confusion.

No need to apologize, you were spot-on to point out that touch has more capability than just creating files. Thanks!

>/dev/null

Maybe it's an stupid question but remeber... I'm Junior.. I use command line to run programs, and some of them gives a lot of information when, for example, you open a window or other actions. That's really bad because my terminal gets full of unwanted messages, so I use "bin file & >/dev/null"... (1 Reply)
