zip -t modificationdate_of_file

Hi,

how can I retrieve the modification date of a file and convert it to the following format : mmddyy ?

In the script I would have the $modification_date_of_file variable holding the value in mmddyy format, which would enable me to use it in :

zip -r backup.zip -t $modification_date_of_file directory

try this...

I assume you are trying to grab the output of the list command.
If so, try using "awk"...

ls -l file |awk '{print $6 $7 }'

this will list only the 2 date columns from the modified date. (the 6 and 7 are column number from the -l . adjust it where you may need to )

Output this to a file, and you can convert it from there.

The date will look like this :

Oct19

(sorry no spaces)

For better use of the "awk" command see the man page.

Recon thank you,

However this doesn't hold the year, how can I determine the year?
The 'stat' command is not available on this server.

I can assign the modification date to a variable like this :

moddate = 'ls -l file |awk '{print $6 $7 }''

So if moddate = Oct18, I have to convert it to 101801.

How can that be accomplished in an efficient way?
