Well, here is one way, although probably not the best way to do it:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
for find in `sort < foo | uniq | awk '{print $1}'`
do
name=`grep -i "^${find}" foo | wc -l | awk '{print $1}'`
echo "${find} ${name}"
done

This assumes that the file containing the information you want counted is named "foo". The only reason I have the second awk in there is to remove some extra spaces in the output - if you want it to work faster, take out the second awk.

Hope this helps.

grep -c value filename

will count the number of times the value is found in the filename

ie

file1 contains

happy birthday
happy birthday
happy spring

grep -c spring file1

will return a value of 1
