When you create an user, the .profile will not be automatically created under the user's home directory unless you set the ENV variabe in the /etc/skel/local.profile ( This has to be done by root). If you don't have the .profile in your home directory, you can edit one and then put the PATH,EDITOR TERM etc. into .profile. Every time you add any new line into this file, you need to run " . .profile" to make the new entries stored into .profile permenantly, so when you login next time, you don't need to set up again.
