Thanks guys, you've been incredibly helpful! It's fairly analogous to the music audition process... "You've got a degree in music? Great! Now shut up and play!".

The piece of paper basically shows you can absorb information, but the application and synthesis of that information with your own personal experiences is what actually matters. I might see if I can write some basic scripts here at work that might speed up processes for my co-workers... I don't want to tread on the toes of the Sysadmin though! The idea of getting heavily involved in UNIX and UNIX based systems is constantly on my mind... I'm finding myself wanting to 'take a break' from my work and basic commands in the shell and do some exploring!

Thanks for the great advice and ideas everyone. I'll keep you updated, and I'll see you around on the forum, no doubt with more pointless and inane questions.

It's not like you guys spend all day dealing with those already...

Yes, that's sums it all up.

There are many people with degrees in music that can't play music very well; and there are many great musicians who have no degree in music, or formal education in music.

Thanks for the analogy!
