invoking non-standard program in linux
I have a program R installed on Ubuntu under /usr/bin/R. I also have a different version installed under /home/user/R. I would like to invoke the locally installed program temporarily. How can I do this automatically by running a script and then switching to the default program?

Running the line PATH="/home/username:${PATH}" will temporarily make /home/username the first path the shell checks for executables. The next time you open a shell the settings will be back at default. You can put this line in a file and have your shell source it with . filename Running a program will not do it since that cannot modify variables inside your shell, it must be sourced.
