SMTP Banner response sloowww

When I telnet to my smtp server (port 25) it takes almost 30 seconds for the banner to appear.

I have checked and the server isn't busy (at least from what I can tell)

Any ideas?

is that one of the ports you have to hit enter twice on? cant recall.

could it be network lag?

No network lag I am able to telnet to the other smtp server that resides on the same subnet.

I have tried hitting enter, only to get:
500 Command unrecognized

Once the banner appears...

Found the problem to be in the sendmail.cf configuration file.

The "Local Domain Name" section was incorrectly defined.
