Router Problems

Hi I run solaris 9 on my ultra 10 as a router with ipfilter as forwarder with hme0 assigned with dhcp and rh0 staticly asigned with 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0. It forwards internet to my mac with osx 192.168.0.2 and my laptop with ip 192.168.0.3 and it works great. My issue is that the sparc must be started after the other machines. It is a bit annoying when my sparc stand as a server for my machines and a reboot will break my connection for the other ones. Anyone who knows how to avoid this?

only way i know to avoid that situation is to get another device to serve as your router ... ebay has a lot of broadband routers with 4-port switch included ... this way you can turn on/off any device you need --- excluding the router --- without affecting your internet connection ...

The thing is that if the sun box behaved normaly whithout closing the connection I never should have rebooted the system . I was using gentoo on the box before and got a uptime for about 300days. So I just want the solaris to work the same way. ,

whether with gentoo or solaris, you have your other machines dependent on the "router" host for the internet connection ... should you have to reboot your router host for any reason (i.e., patch install, hardware reset, etc.) while working on a major project online with your mac --- you'd be toast if you didn't save your work on the mac before the sudden disconnection ... i'd err on the side of caution and spend the few extra bucks myself ...

The thing is that I used to solve it that way with my dlink di-714. But its such a small network so I can plan my patches and upgrades whenever the other computers not in use. Its more of a irritationmoment that I donīt know why it dosent work. The thing is why it cant reconnect after a reboot of the other machines. My gues is that its defaultroute or something.... But your effort to support is prussiated and I agree thats its the most efficant way to solve this but you know to learn, the hard way is often the best way. (escuse my english im not a native speaker)

i don't like extra work where nothing is to be gained ... besides, putting in the extra device gives you more flexibility and less noise --- turning off the solaris box when you don't need it makes things quieter ...
