Yet another problem on one of my nodes.
I am unable to open my password file .It shows some junk alphabets.
more over I am facing some strange problem...I found one of the users created in my server has the root directory inside his user home directory
Also I m facing problems as shown in the below code
The user eschhen is not having any files named as local.profile or local.login or .profile inside his home directory..How is it possible.??.And moreover he has a root directory inside his home directory..Now the real issue is that I have a backup script to take the FS backup of the node, and the script could not execute after entering the export/home/eschhen directory as there is no ".." hidden folder defined...Hence I am unable to exit the script from this directory..IF I try to delete this directory i fear my entire FS will be deleted as root is also present in the /export/home/eschhen directory...
Please advise me what to do?
Your file system looks seriously broken. With such a /etc/password file, you'll have a hard time booting, login in or whatever.
Dude, Thanks for your reply...However I am able to login through my normal users as root and sysdba etc...I haven't tried logging in as eschhen as I dont have password from it..Moreover I cant even delete the user..As it shows no such user exists....Please advice if a FS restore from a tape backup can resolve the issue?..or a reboot will also serve my cause?
What is the output from this sequence of enquiry commands?
With the above information we should hopefully be able to work out what is happening here.
Ps. I broadly agree with jlliagre but have a nagging doubt about whether there is a rogue mount (or to be strictly correct an "automount" trigged by a "cd").
Further to previous posts.
Immediately after logging in as user "root", what is the output from:
Afterthought (completely forgot the basics!)
Please post the output from these commands (immediately after logging in as "root") which find out whether you have a corrupt passwd or group files:
Thanks dude..

Although I have never been through this problem in my 4 years career..Its for the first time I am getting this sort of issue and its a live server..Hence I am fearing to take this issue for long..As there will be customer escalations soon..So need to get a resolution soon ...However the customer is not bothered about anything unless traffic is impacted..Currently all the applications are running fine on the server..but I suspect that this problem may affect the applications also in near future..
Please help me out guys...

Or perhaps are you in a chrooted environment, a bogus zone, whatever ...
You probably should better figure out first what caused that problem before trying to correct it.
or the opposite.
Not an unix expert, I read a few pages on the web about passwd files, but I didn't find the answers I need about the last 8 lines of the passwd file I'm taking a look at.
I'm assuming their shortcuts to another file that may have the actual usernames of users on the system.
Please, any help... (1 Reply)
