ok ignore my last message..i realized what my mistake was..
with this:

awk '/,1,/ {j++} {sum+=$3} {average=sum/j}  END {print average}' 1.spd > test

i get:
Code:
awk: (FILENAME=1.spd FNR=1) fatal: division by zero attempted

whats wrong here?

hmm.....
looks like you're calculating averages for EVERY line (not sure if that's what you want - you might want to do it in the 'END' block instead - but it's your call - I have no idea of the file format and/or the objective).
But...... it looks like one of the lines/records didn't have any matching patterns '/,1,' which resulted in 'j' still being '0', The you try to 'average=sum/j' - dividing by '0'.
Sounds plausible?

Who knows? You haven't told us what is in the file you are processing.

Does it have any lines that contain ",1,"? If not, j will always be 0.

found my mistake.. it was the wrong pattern..thanks for your help.
