Awk limitation

Hi All,

I have an awk code below.
I have an input file which has a line which has a last field with about 4000 characters and it pop up an error stated below. It is too much for awk to take ?

Awk Code:
{if( $NF == "2007" && $1 == "**" ) LINE = $0;}
END{printf("%20s\n",LINE); }

Error:
$nawk -f getfull_line_awk myinputfile
nawk: input record `0017c C12efusecntl0 ...' too long
input record number 2795, file myinputfile source line number 1

show the whole code. also show a sample of the input file as well as describe the output that you are expecting
# 3
Old 09-20-2007
This is actually the full code.
My aim is to capture the last occurence of such a pattern eg: ** sdcs sdcs ssdsd 2007

Awk Code:
{if( $NF == "2007" && $1 == "**" ) LINE = $0;}
END{printf("%20s\n",LINE); }

you want to get : ** eee eee ee ee ee eee 2007 right?
i have no problem with your code:
Code:
# ./test.sh
** eee eee ee ee ee eee 2007

i use gawk. Is it always the last 3rd record ? If it is,
Code:
awk '
{
   last3=last2
   last2=save
   save=$0
}END {
   print last3
}' "file"

output:
Code:
./testnew.sh
** eee eee ee ee ee eee 2007

Siva

hi,

Try using nawk.
I faced similar problem which is sorted after using nawk.

nawk 'BEGIN {LINE =0} if( $NF == "2007" && $1 == "**" ) {LINE = $0}
END{printf("%20s\n",LINE)}'

hope this will work.

Hi Ghostdog,

You mean you can get the expected output with my 2nd input which has the "0017c" term ? Make sure the zeros comes after "0017c C12efusecntl0 read_rr" in your try out. EG -> "0017c C12efusecntl0 read_rr 000......."
If you copy and paste the input straight from the screen here, you will not get the input right.

And sorry it is not always the last 3 line. It is random.
