Prefix the direct command with echo command for debugging
echo awk 'NR==L {$NF=$NF" "U} 1' L=$reportline U=$EmonUser $

For debugging while really running, use
set -vx # debug on
awk 'NR==L {$NF=$NF" "U} 1' L=$reportline U=$EmonUser $
set +vx # debug off
