Yup, should be possible, just a little example :

Code:
# cat myfile
Bb2$£¤µ%§\°~`!@#$%^&*()_-+={[}]|:;"'<,>.?/
# a="@#+="
# sed 's/[^'$a'[:alnum:]]*//g' myfile
Bb2µ@#+=
#

Code:
# a="#@|_%"
# sed 's/[^'$a'[:alnum:]]*//g' myfile
Bb2µ%@#%_|
#

I found that this code eats all blank spaces too. I am trying meanwhile if you can solve it then its better. I found putting " " makes it solve that as follows.
Code:
sed 's/[^'$a'" "[:alnum:]]*//g' ${a[j]} > revised.txt

You can just use the [:space:] character class like :

Code:
sed 's/[^'$a'[:space:][:alnum:]]*//g' myfile

Or if you want keep the space and remove they other type of space you can just :

Code:
sed 's/[^'$a' [:alnum:]]*//g' myfile

(no need to enclose the space that is between ' and [ into double quote since it is already enclosed into single quotes)

You can also ensure that your variable doesn't contain space (using bash variable substitution for example)
Code:
sed 's/[^'${a// /}' [:alnum:]]*//g' myfile

Code:
$ a="# @ %"
$ echo $a
# @ %
$ echo ${a// /}
#@%
$ sed 's/[^'$a'[:space:][:alnum:]]*//g' myfile
sed: -e expression n°1, caractère 5: Commande `s' inachevée
$ sed 's/[^'${a// /}'[:space:][:alnum:]]*//g' myfile
Bb2µ%@ #%
$

Note that the original request was to delete punctuation characters except for a chosen list of punctuation characters to be exempted. This script will also remove whitespace and control characters. I think a minor modification does what was requested:
Code:
a='list' # The variable a specifies the set of punctuation characters that are not to be deleted.
sed 's/[^'$a' [:alnum:][:space:][:cntrl:]]*//g'

Note that if a close square bracket (]) is in list, it must be the 1st character in list and if hyphen (-) is in list, it must be the last character in list. A single-quote (') cannot be included in list. If a single-quote is needed, it will have to be handled differently.

@Don Cragun,

Yup, that is exaclty what i suggest in my post #13 ...

Why not to use alnum instead of punct ?
Just add in the list the character or class you want to keep
But you are right to add the info regarding the placement of ] and - in the list : it is good to know for those who didn't Smilie
