You want all of the lines of a file output onto one single line

awk '{printf ("%s ", $0} END{print ""}' infile > outfile
# to a variable
myvariable=$( awk '{printf ("%s ", $0} ' infile)

-e enables interpretation of backslash escapes

Hey Jim,
Are you sure? there is some syntax mistake, and unfortunately I am not experienced enough to figure it out. But it complain about it.

And yes, it would be much better to assign it to some variable and then to use it later ..Smilie

Please correct the syntax. (mine is bash shell)
