so in your example, i want something that would search for "sweetdeal" and "nothing", and when BOTH of these strings are found on different lines, I want them to be outputted like this:

Code:
awk '/sweetdeal/ && /nothing/' foo.txt:

sweetdeal
nothing

ok you can change && to || from above
Code:
awk '/sweetdeal/ || /nothing/' foo.txt

or you don't want to have dups in the output?

unfortunately that spits out an output if either of those strings are found.

what i need is a solution that will ONLY spit out an output if both specified strings are found on the different lines.

i'm guessing, although the situation i'm describing sounds simple, it really can't be done. google isnt producing a solution to it neither.

Code:
awk '/sweetdeal/ {s++} /nothing/ {n++} END {if (s>=1 && n>=1) print "sweetdeal" ORS "nothing"} ' foo.txt
