either is a nonsense command. The shell will complain that it cannot run the file "Tue"

Actually, it ran date.

EDIT: I understand if i gave it `date` it would not be able to run Tuesday, but I think the difference between the versions was the evaluation of my statement was finished, and the final result was the string date. The system then tried to execute that command, and as date is a command, it was able to.
