Is there a way to append to already existing file using sftp.

sftp (or any ftp) would not do this - but, if you first get the file from the system, append your new file to it on your server, then put it back, you will have done what you want to do - more processing time, more network issues, no real way of checking you got it right. Something like this:

Server A:/tmp/old-data
Server B:/tmp/appended-data

From serverB:
ftp serverA
cd /tmp
get old-data
quit
cat /tmp/appended-data >> ./old-data
ftp serverA
cd /tmp
put old-data
quit

And now everyone can jump on this and maybe give you a better way of doing it!

I already implemented the approach you mentioned.

Thought there would be other alternatives for doing that.

There are actually other approaches you can take but they cost money. NDM (Network Data Mover) aka Connect::\Direct from Sterling Software provides the facilities for secure, compressed and encrypted transmissions between any platform. It also allows privileged users to execute shell scipts and other programs on the receiving server. Its a nice peice of software, but it isnt free!
