How can i get user id from root?

It is a bash script which would be run as root.
So
Code:
id -u
id -g

these return 0.
But i want to get the id -u and id -g for normal user account ,which is normally 500 or 1000.
Is it possible to get the value using that script that will be run being root.

Try "man id" for variants

Dear cola,
Code:
id -un

will give you the text name of the first user listed in /etc/passwd with your uid number.
Code:
id -gn

will give you the text name of the first group in /etc/group that matches your primary group.
Code:
id -Gn

will give you the text names names for secondary groups.

This holds true if it for root or any other user.

If on the other hand, you are after the uid number for another user, simply specify them as a prameter:-
Code:
id -u bob

I hope that this helps.

Are you looking for something like this?
Code:
if [ "$(id -u)" != "0" ]; then
echo "This script must be run as root"
   exit 1
fi

First from terminal:
Code:
su
password:
./thatscript

In that script i used this userid=$(id -u), it always gives the value 0, i want 500.

Ahaa! It may be possible (depending on your implementation) to use the USER variable, such that:-
Code:
$ su
password:
# echo $USER
bob
# id -u $USER
123
#

Does that help? It depends if $USER is respected as the person who logged on to the terminal.

Code:
id -u $USER

Done.
