Ahaa! It may be possible (depending on your implementation) to use the USER variable, such that:-
Code:
$ su
password:
# echo $USER
bob
# id -u $USER
123
#

Does that help? It depends if $USER is respected as the person who logged on to the terminal.

Whenever i switch from root to another user, by doing su - user, it takes me to home directory of user. This is very annoying as i want to be in same dir to run different commands as root sometimes and sometimes as normal user. How to fix this? (1 Reply)
