I am looking to be able to use chfn (or another tool that may be better suited) within a shell script. I would like to be able to change the long username of a Mac User if it has been changed to something else. I currently have a script that connects to a database and gets what the users name should be based on hardware address. To get the current user name - I am using:
It appears the chfn just uses the vi editor - however, I have never used vi in a script. chfn shortname gives me the code below
I would like to be able to change
