try this..

awk '/c/ {count=count+1} END {print count}' c="$1" <file_to_search>

use nawk on solaris

The command you provided is just giving out the number of records in the data file irrespective of the number of matches found. If i use a word which doesn't exist in the data file then also it returns the 3 the total number of rows.
