Yes, that would be correct (Reference: it's 11:52 UTC as I'm writing this). The perceived "problem" is that the Linux servers use UTC (aka GMT) as their timezone, which probably isn't your local timezone.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for this valuable information. Actually from morning I was not able to sync the time with the PDC as the PDC went for a reboot and the port was again blocked. I somehow managed to make it work.

Now coming to the issue of timezone, I tried running setup. In the Timezone config, UTC was checked. I unchecked it and ran ntpdate again. But the timezone did not change. I manually tried to change the date, though the time was changed, yet the UTC was not replaced by IST. I also checked up clock in /etc/sysconfig/. There timezone was correct and UTC was False. I also tried to use the tzselect command. But none of the above seem to work. Do you think a reboot is required?

Thanks in advance

Regards

Jagdish

Check your /etc/localtime file. It has to be one of
  • a symbolic link to /usr/share/zoneinfo/<tzselect's timezone>
  • a hardlink to the same (check with ls -li)
  • a copy of the same (check with diff or md5sum)
That should set the correct timezone. tzselect itself can (AFAIK) only prepare some environment variables for single users, but not the system itself. And I'd suggest to leave the UTC setting in /etc/sysconfig/clock to true, as it only affects the hardware clock.

1. The /etc/localtime file is a hardlink to /usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/calcutta. What next ?
2. If the Clock file has UTC =True, when system clock is synched to hardware clock, will the zone setting change ?
