New Topics?

I am digging the site. Very well done. I especially like how well the rules are enforced.

Do you think that maybe you will open up new topics? I support not only a wide array of unix flavors, but a lot of applications as well such as LDAP, Apache, etc. I am more concerned with LDAP Sun One. Would you guys open up a whole topic dedicated to just LDAP? It really is a complex piece. I think type of knowledge transfer would add a lot of value to the site.

What do you think?

My guess would be that that particualr topic would not see a lot of traffic. We rarely get any qustions here about ldap; in fact we get many more on databases, in particlar Oracle, but have so far declined to create a new forum for that because the volume of traffic did not seem to suggest that it would be worthwhile as an individual forum.

I'm sure the other moderators and admins will give their input also, but I would make a suggestion to you. If you have a FAQ you would like to share or are willing to put the time into creating an article or tutorial for that forum then please do so.

Maybe we could create an "UNIX/Linux Applications" forum that covers LDAP, sendmail, NTP, and other unix/linux apps? in the network computing category? or general category?

I also have been thinking that an "applications" forum might be a good idea. Some of the things you mention like sendmail and ntp seem a little bit more part of the OS. But opinions are going to vary on stuff like that. In addition to LDAP, we have had requests for an Oracle forum which seems way too specific. At first I was thinking about a "database" forum, but that still seems too specific when I considered that we don't have a great location for stuff like web servers.

One possible alternative would be a "server applications" forum since client stuff generally will fit in the desktop forum. But an argument against that is that not all applications fit a client-server mold. (Tripwire for instance.) So I like the applications forum idea. Not sure who its parent should be though.

We have now opened the Unix Applications forum. We also took this opportunity to reorganize our forum structure a little bit. Smilie
