Message Never got replied.

Hi,

I had put up a post a couple of days back. I haven't got any replies yet. Now it's become old so the chances of it been seen by anybody is very less let alone answering it. Please tell me what I should do now? Should I create a new thread with the same contents again?

Regd,
M.

The only thread you have that hasn't had any replies is the one about X-windows and GUI

Starting another thread or posting 'a bump message' to the original would be breaking the rules (See the rules ).

Not all questions get responses - this is a site that is giving answers when the answers are known because of experience or found with a search on the Internet - it's not a support desk - we all have our own servers to maintain and don't always get around to all the questions - folks like yourself have to step up and assist others. In your case, as people log in to this site, they will see that question as new - if they haven't logged in in a few days/weeks, then it will still be new to them. If they have an answer or suggestion, they will post to the thread.

I m aware of the fact that this is not a support desk and am indeed thankful for the help that this site is offering. I was just concerned that this message would soon be buried by newer ones considering the number of queries that come in daily. Your explanation has clarified that.

Thanks for the reply.

Actually people who bump up a thread in (violation of our rules) are shooting themselves in the foot. Zero replies flags a question as unanswered. You can use our advanced search and pick a forum and then search for "at most 0" replies to get a list of unanswered questions for that forum.

mahatma, you need someone who knows both exceed and solaris cde well enough to help with an obscure problem. It could be that we don't have one. You may need to be patient. It may be that question never gets answered.

Also I do not interpret rule 4 to mean that you may never again raise the question. That adverb promptly must be there for a reason. I still love this thread where Cameron bumps his question after 10 months. It is always hard to draw a line in the sand, but my personal feeling is that a bump after a month or so is not prohibited.

Oh...So I can bump the question after a month (If it is still unanswered, that is).

Thanks for the input.

Just fot the records...The problem occurs when connecting to that specific Solaris machine using any Xserver software, not just Exceed. This made me doubt that it had something to do with the Solaris machine.

I will update this info in the query as well.

My thoughts are that people often don't answer questions because the original question does not have enough information or is worded is such a way that implies the poster did not take the time to frame their question in a way that would increase chances of a reply.

I often search for threads with 0 replies to answer, so bumping a thread, just for the sake of bumping, would not help get my attention - as Perderabo pointed out.

So, I advise that instead of "bumping" threads, reply to your own thread with more, relevant information. That might not really be "bumping" -- but "enhancing" :-)
