Thanks.. I am now able to transfer files interactively with FTP.
Is there a way to build a dynamic file with the user Id, password (anonymous ftp user), and the put command and pass it to the FTP without user intervention??
I am using a shell to write the data to a file then using the 'ftp -v - 'filename' but it stops at the password prompt. As soon as I hit enter it finishes the process successfully. Getting closer!!
This is exactly what I'm trying to do. Please if some one knows how to do this please post it up here.

have you checked out this is what i use to do "batch style" ftp from unix to win/unix. very easy to install and even easier to setup. so you can script all your ftp transfers.

IT WORKS!!! All I needed was a .netrc file in $HOME directory
and it performs the automatic login with native ftp.

The .netrc entries look like this :

machine xxxxxx login xxxxxx password xxxxxx

where the xxxxxx are the key values needed on the receiving end

Yes, I also use the .netrc file on UNIX platforms when doing automated FTP. I would advise you to look carefully at your application and determine if having login information in the .netrc file and traversing the network in clear text is an acceptable risk. Assessing the risk is up to you and your working/business environment. If you work for a large corporation or government entity, they may have security policies that influence your assessment.
