HP-UX

We have an HP Visualize C3000, with NEC CRT Monitor and USB Compaq keyboard connected to it. Now the machine boots up and I am able to interact with the Main menu, look at the configurations, etc. When I enter: BO PRI
Interact with IPL? Y
ISL> hpux -is

After this part the system boots up and logs in as root where i get the message

WARNING: YOU ARE SUPERUSER !!

Now after this prompt I can't key in anything and the system just sits there.

There are 8 TAB's at the bottom of the scree and the 4th TAB called REMOTE MODE has * on it. But i can't do anything with these tabs. I tried pressing function keys i.e F4, F7, etc. I also tried pressing Ctrl + D, Ctrl + Q but nothing works.

Then i tried using serial console by connecting it to windows machine and using both putty and hyperterminal. but after the ISL> hpux -is all the characters are garabage, so i can't do anything with serial console.

Please help !!!!!!

takes the system into single user mode where you can do system maintenence activities / Reset passwds

wat do u exactly want to do .. Pls clarify

What settings are you using on the serial line? Try setting the serial line to 9600 8-N-1.

Is this a cold build, or does it normally work multi-user?

Btw. Last time I saw these symptoms the Console serial cable was plugged in the wrong way round.

@ultimatix - basically this HP-UX box was working fine and then suddenly we couldn't connect to it, even though it is up and running. Since then I'm trying to login via console (Serial & USB), but i get stuck on this screen with 8 tabs.

@fpmurphy - I tried all the different settings but no luck. I even connect monitor to the box directly and used USB Keyboard but i get stuck on the same screen.

@methyl - the machine normally works in muti-user and it was running fine until recently when nobody could connect to the box. I checked the serial cable and it is connected in right direction.

If I get pass this screen and be able to type once i login, then i can run some diagnostics to see what really happened but until then i can't do anything.

It really does sound like your terminal type or settings are incorrect. This may only apply to the root user. A long shot but why not try and boot into multiuser mode from ISL? Maybe you will get a different terminal type.
