When I write something like dir="~/dox"
ls $dir then I get the message that the directory '~/docs' does not exist. I understand that the tilde is not expanded at the time of the above assignment because of the quotes. But why is it not expanded at the time when the ls command is... (2 Replies)

I'm trying to figure out whether some files exist. Locations of those file are stored in a plain text file called temp.txt in this way:
All environment variables ($LIB_HOME and $ORACLE_HOME) have been set using export command.

I have a bunch of files which I need to transfer to another location... and some of these I need to skip.
For e.g. let us say the files are:
cust_abc.dat
cust_xyz.dat
cust_def.dat
and I only want to move the first two.

Say you have this numeric variable that can be set by the user but you never want it to leave a certain range when it gets printed. How could you use parameter expansion such that it will never expand outside of that boundary? Thanks

Hi,
I have a script that at one point prints to a file as follows:
printf -- $2 > ~/.mydir/$1
The idea is to print to a hidden directory .mydir in my home directory. I've already sanitized the inputs and $1 is in the format path1/path2/filename and $2 is some user input.

NAME
networks - network name data base
DESCRIPTION
The file associates Internet (IP) addresses with official network names and aliases. This allows the user to refer to a network by a sym-
bolic name instead of using an Internet address. For each network, a single line should be present with the following information:
<official network name> <network number> <aliases>
Aliases are other names under which a network is known. For example:

A line cannot start with a blank (tab or space character). Items are separated by any number or combination of blanks. A character indi-
cates the beginning of a comment. Characters from the up to the end of the line are not interpreted by routines which search the file.
Trailing blanks are allowed at the end of a line. For the Internet, this file is normally created from the official network database main-
tained at the Network Information Control Center (NIC), though local changes may be required to bring it up-to-date regarding unofficial
aliases and/or unknown networks.
Network numbers can be specified in conventional Internet dot notation using the routine from the internet address manipulation library
(see inet(3N). Network names can contain any printable character other than a white space, new-line, or comment character.
