It links the final program, a.out, to the curses library. The curses library is probably in somewhere like /usr/lib/libcurses.so. Linking to it lets lets it call functions from the curses library; without -lcurses, any curses functions you call in your program would be undefined external symbols. The program will automatically load libcurses.so when the program is run, and will not work without libcurses.so.
