Each PC is 100% compatible. I'dd start Linux the Unix variant that is easy to learn and has a lot of free support. And as a Windows man, lot's of GUI interfaces
Just pick one. Mandrake is my favorite, but I know that there are many, many more favorites on this forum. Please search the forums for equal questions you can think of. There are many people that started thinking this way.
