You are right. In fact i used "grep" here as a stand-in for my usual beautify-before-reading-process which looks like this ("<b>" is blank, "<t>" is tab):
Code:
sed 's/#.*$//
s/^[<b><t>]*//
s/[<b><t>]*$//
/^$/d' "$fIn" | ...
This filters out all leading/trailing whitespace, removes comments and removes blank lines. Because i like to annotate my configs or workfiles extensively and i like to format them so that they are (for me) easy to read i need some preprocessing to remove the (for a script superfluous) extra parts in my loops.
I have an RPM that I am trying to install and it keeps coming back with:
I know I could kill the bird by throwing a "yum install *perl*" at it, but this seems like hurling a skyscraper at an ant...

zgrep
ZGREP(1) General Commands Manual ZGREP(1)NAME
zgrep - search possibly compressed files for a regular expression
SYNOPSIS
zgrep [ grep_options ] [ -e ] pattern filename...
DESCRIPTION
Zgrep invokes grep on compressed or gzipped files. These grep options will cause zgrep to terminate with an error code:
(-[drRzZ]|--di*|--exc*|--inc*|--rec*|--nu*). All other options specified are passed directly to grep. If no file is specified, then the
standard input is decompressed if necessary and fed to grep. Otherwise the given files are uncompressed if necessary and fed to grep.
If the GREP environment variable is set, zgrep uses it as the grep program to be invoked.
EXIT CODE
2 - An option that is not supported was specified.
