I think RudiC meant colrm 7 instead of colrm 6, but even with that, it doesn't get rid of duplicates in the resulting array.
The following script shows what happens when setting the array using colrm 6, colrm 7 | sort -nru, and for systems where colrm is not available, sed | sort -nru:
and, on a system with both colrm and sed when run in a directory containing the four text files shown in the 1st message in this thread, produces the output:
Array variables aren't defined by the standards, but this script should with with any ksh or bash. It was tested with both ksh and bash on OS X Version 10.9.2.

If I press enter without value I wish to set rc=Y. This is my default.

I have a problem with sed. It doesn't recognize the "\n" character. It substitudes an "n", instead of introducing a new line.
This doesn't happend with print $ print "test \n \n" (it deos introduce two lines after hello)

SYNOPSIS
column [-tx] [-c columns] [-s sep] [file ...]
DESCRIPTION
The column utility formats its input into multiple columns. Rows are filled before columns. Input is taken from file operands, or, by
default, from the standard input. Empty lines are ignored.
The options are as follows:
-c Output is formatted for a display columns wide.
-s Specify a set of characters to be used to delimit columns for the -t option.
-t Determine the number of columns the input contains and create a table. Columns are delimited with whitespace, by default, or with
the characters supplied using the -s option. Useful for pretty-printing displays.
-x Fill columns before filling rows.
Column exits 0 on success, >0 if an error occurred.
ENVIRONMENT
COLUMNS The environment variable COLUMNS is used to determine the size of the screen if no other information is available.
