A file is usually part of one package and one alone. A file owned by several packages would mean something went seriously wrong when packaging.

If you mean by "owned by many packages" that many contain a file named this way but in different paths (i.e. "/pkg1/commonname", "/pkg2/commonname", ...): you can search for certain paths like this:

Code:
yum whatprovides '/path/to/file'

to limit your search.
