In course of understanding networking in Solaris, I have these doubts on Interfaces. Please clarify me. I have done fair research in this site and others but could not be clarified.
1. In the "ifconfig -a" command, I see many interfaces and their configurations. But I see many physiacl interfaces and their virtual interfaces.

For each interface, I see an IP address. But 10.1.32.4 is the IP I use to connect to this box. So, why do we need other interfaces?
2. We can create 255 virtual interfaces for a physical interface, so why do we need another physical interface if we can use a single interface?
3. Also, in case of disks, we scan and then identify the new disks in 'format' command output. In case of interfaces, is there is any way we do reconfiguration and then see unplumbed new interfaces?
Please excuse my vagueness. One doubt is arising another.

which network interface i must sellect during the solaris9 installation le0 or hme0 ?
this system is part of the network, it is a standalone system
and is not on any domain.

Would anyone know why a V440 Solaris 9 machine's interfaces (ce0 and ce1)
will not failover?
Both interfaces are on the same subnet, but different IPs. I can pull the plug on once interface (ce0) and ce1 will be accessible. I can reverse it and pull ce1, and ce0 will NOT be accessible. ... (5 Replies)
this is more of a curious question. I have a jumpstart server i imaged from a laptop. And in /etc/there are multiple hostname.ce0:1-2-3 etc.. entries. in that file each one has name similar to this jumpr_koc jumpr_poc etc.. So after getting a Nagios plugin up and running that checks certain things including network interfaces, I get an error off the one box I built (as opposed to all of the others that were built by a former employee). The error complains of the "NIC logical group" failing.

vde_l3 - Virtual Distributed Ethernet 'Layer 3' Switch.
SYNOPSIS
vde_l3 -v vde_plug:ipaddress/netmask [-v...] [-r target_network/netmask:gateway] [-G default_gw] [-M mgmt_socket]
DESCRIPTION
A vde_l3 connects to one or more vde_switches, performing ip forwarding among its virtual interfaces. A new interface is created at startup
for each -v option given at command line. Static routes to target networks can be defined using the -r option.
vde_l3 -v /var/run/s1.ctl:192.168.0.1/24
connects to the vde sock at /var/run/s1.ctl with its virtual interface ve0, having the address 192.168.0.1 and netmask 255.255.255.0.

can define as many interfaces as she wants.
-r target_network/netmask:gateway
Specify a static route through gateway to reach hosts in target_network with netmask netmask. One can define as many routes as she
wants.
-G default_gw
Specify a default gateway, to be used whenever no static route is defined for a target host.
-M mgmt_socket
the unix socket where the parameters (interfaces addresses, routes, etc.) can be checked and changed runtime. unixterm(1) can be
used as a remote terminal for wirefilter.
