We have 500+ stores spread across the US (42 states). We use modems as fail over in the event the primary DSL or satellite connection goes down.
The credit card industry uses both network connection (Ethernet) and phone lines (modems) to do its business. Usually the phone line is fail over, but some small retailers use that as the only connection.
Large modem banks are still a good size chunk of the modem manufactures business, sold mostly to credit card processing companies.

Why is it so difficult (read: impossible) to configure and run an internal modem in linux operating system. Not all can afford an external modem and hardware modems are obsolete as well as out of production.

Hello There,
I can understand that this is a classic problem with linux that it does not support even the hardware external modems. I have recently tried a USR External USB v 92 Modem (Model USR 5636). It has got its own DSP @56 Mhz, flash ram of 256 KBs and a EEPROM for upgrading the firmware.... (1 Reply)

I am using egrep to extract numbers from a file and storing them as variables in a script. But I am not able to do any arithmetic operations on the variables using "expr" because it stores them as char and not integers. Here is my code and the error I get. Any help will be appreciated.

dialups - list of terminal devices requiring a dial-up password
SYNOPSIS
/etc/dialups
DESCRIPTION
dialups is an ASCII file which contains a list of terminal devices that require a dial-up password. A dial-up password is an additional
password required of users who access the computer through a modem or dial-up port. The correct password must be entered before the user
is granted access to the computer. The set of ports that require a dial-up password are listed in the dialups file.
Each entry in the dialups file is a single line of the form:
terminal-device
where
terminal-device The full path name of the terminal device that will require a dial-up password for users accessing the computer
through a modem or dial-up port.
The dialups file should be owned by the root user and the root group. The file should have read and write permissions for the owner (root)
only.
EXAMPLES
Example 1: A sample dialups file.
Here is a sample dialups file:
/dev/term/a
/dev/term/b
/dev/term/c
FILES
/etc/d_passwd dial-up password file
/etc/dialups list of dial-up ports requiring dial-up passwords
